We were joined by two brilliant minds—Professor Sean Tweedy from the UQ School of Human Movement and Nutrition Sciences, and Professor Marc Ruitenberg, Head of the Neurotrauma Research Laboratory and Churchill Fellow at the UQ School of Biomedical Sciences. Their groundbreaking work is bringing us closer to a future where spinal cord injuries can be cured.
I was honoured to share my personal journey—living with a high-level spinal cord injury, embracing independence with the help of dedicated support workers and an amazing family. Speaking to a high-performance team like Red Bull Racing, who constantly push the limits, was a powerful reminder of how quickly life can change—and how resilient the human spirit can be.
Imagine a world where a cure exists. A world where someone like me could once again hug my loved ones, walk without a wheelchair, and reclaim freedoms once taken for granted. That vision isn’t just life-changing—it’s world-changing for every person, family, and friend affected by spinal cord injury.
Here in Australia, over 20,800 people live with a spinal cord injury, with one new injury occurring every single day. The financial cost? An estimated $3.7 billion per year. But the human cost is far greater—and that's why this research matters so much.
After the talks, we had some fun with fitness challenge activities—treadmill drills, and I joined the reaction tests with BlazePods. Always a great way to connect, move, and raise awareness!
